Rajkanika, Jan 30 (IANS): Martyrs’ Day has been observed across the state. It has been 73 years since the sacrifice of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. Guests laid wreaths at a joint statue of Gandhi and Gandhi’s servant Raghu Nayak in Jagulaipada in Rajkanika block of Kendrapara district. Kanika Raja Shivendra Narayan Bhanjdeb joined as a guest and paid homage to the two great men by laying a wreath. In addition, Raghunath’s heroism is a source of pride and glory for all of us today & opined that Raghu’s life story would inspire the next generation. On behalf of the jayamalaba Nodal School Teachers and Committee paid deep homage to him by remembering two great men with incense, lamps and sandals.Shuvrangshu Sutar, editor of the Gandhi-Raghu Memorial Committee, Kailash Chandra Sahu, headmaster of Jaimalab Nodal Vidyalaya, Harekrishna Barik, editor of Sudha Sahitya Patrika, Snigdhamayi Nayak, teacher, Sefali Kumari Nayak and Mamata Das were present on the occasion. Gandhi was reportedly shot dead by Nathuram. At the same time, Raghu Nayak, the Oriya son of Birla Bhavan’s Mali, bravely arrested Nathuram and handed him over to the police. Raghu kicked Gandhiji in the arm. Mahatma Gandhi breathed his last, saying “Hey-Ram”, placing his head on the lap of Gandhi’s servant Raghu Nayak. Raghu’s heroism and bravery received a certificate of Rs 500 from the then President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
