NewDelhi November 18:Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday had a telephonic conversation with US President-elect Joe Biden. This was the first direct interaction between the two world leaders since Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris secured a Electoral College majority to win the presidency of the United States.<\/p>\n
In a tweet, PM Modi said, “Spoke to US President-elect @JoeBiden on phone to congratulate him. We reiterated our firm commitment to the Indo-US strategic partnership and discussed our shared priorities and concerns – Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region.<\/p>\n
“I also conveyed warm congratulations for VP-elect @KamalaHarris. Her success is a matter of great pride and inspiration for members of the vibrant Indian-American community, who are a tremendous source of strength for Indo-US relations,” the Prime Minister said in a second tweet.<\/p>\n
The Biden-Harris team said in a statement, “The president-elect spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India. The president-elect thanked the prime minister for his congratulations and expressed his desire to strengthen and expand the US-India strategic partnership alongside the first vice president of South Asian descent.”<\/p>\n
“The president-elect noted that he looks forward to working closely with the prime minister on shared global challenges, including containing Covid-19 and defending against future health crises, tackling the threat of climate change, launching the global economic recovery, strengthening democracy at home and abroad, and maintaining a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” said the Biden-Harris statement.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Narendra Modi last met Joe Biden in Washington on September 30, 2014, when the latter was vice president to Barack Obama.<\/p>\n
“The leaders agreed to work closely to further advance the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, built on shared values and common interests,” said the MEA in a statement.<\/p>\n
The two leaders also discussed key priorities for both the administrations, including “containing the Covid-19 pandemic, promoting access to affordable vaccines, tackling climate change, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific Region.”<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Modi in his conversation with the President-elect also recalled his earlier interactions Joe Biden, including during his official visits to the United States in 2014 and in 2016. Biden had chaired the Joint Session of the US Congress that was addressed by the Prime Minister during his 2016 visit.<\/p>\n
After the election results made it clear that Joe Biden will be the 46th President of USA, he spoke to many world leaders which included, leaders of France, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Chile, Israel, South Africa and also Pope Francis.<\/p>\n
