{"id":3672,"date":"2021-01-07T05:47:42","date_gmt":"2021-01-07T05:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/odiannews.com\/en\/?p=3672"},"modified":"2021-01-07T05:47:42","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T05:47:42","slug":"not-the-first-time-india-looks-for-alternative-chief-guest-on-republic-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/odiannews.com\/en\/3672\/","title":{"rendered":"Not the first time India looks for alternative chief guest on Republic Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">NewDelhi January 7 : Had British Prime Minister Boris Johnson been able to make it to the Republic Day Parade on the Rajpath in New Delhi, it would have been the first instance in 28 years of a UK leader being the chief guest at the annual event. The last UK leader to attend the Republic Day Parade was John Major, the former British prime minister, in 1993.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Boris Johnson deferred his state visit to an undecided date in the first half of the year due to the aggravated Covid-19 situation in the UK. In a statement, the UK government said Boris Johnson would visit India before Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the UK to attend the G-7 meet as a guest later this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The postponement means that India has to look for an alternate chief guest for the Republic Day Parade &#8212; an event held annually on January 26 since 1950 with a glittering ceremony. However, this is not the first occasion when India is in this situation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There have been at least two occasions in recent years when officials at the external affairs ministry have had to look for an alternate chief guest. In 2012, the Manmohan Singh government had approached the\u00a0Sultan of Oman, Qaboos bin Said Al Said, to be the chief guest at the 2013 Republic Day Parade<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A confirmation had been received from Oman for formal invitation. However, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said later declined to be the chief guest at the Republic Day Parade. Incidentally, the\u00a0Sultan of Oman had not received the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding for 2004. The Manmohan Singh government announced this award to the Sultan of Oman in 2007.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the Sultan of Oman declined India&#8217;s invitation, the external affairs ministry worked with the Bhutan government to invite King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to be the chief guest at the Republic Day Parade. The formal invitation was extended by then External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid who visited Bhutan just two weeks ahead of the Republic Day in 2013.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the second instance, US President Donald Trump was the front-runner to be the chief guest at the Republic Day Parade at the Rajpath in New Delhi in 2019. The external affairs ministry approached the US government in the second half of 2018. It seemed that the Trump administration had agreed for the formal invitation, but a statement was made saying that Donald Trump would not be able to visit New Delhi for the Republic Day Parade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, India had not sent a formal invitation to Donald Trump. In that sense, it was not a &#8220;decline&#8221; from the US government. Later, India reached out to the South African government with the thought that a country that had not been represented in recent years should get the invite.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the end, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest. He was only the second South African to be the chief guest at the Republic Day event after former President Nelson Mandela, who came to India in 1995.<\/p>\n<p><script>function
