Mumbai April 19 :In a daring rescue caught on camera, a railway pointsman ran on the tracks, risking his own life, to save a child from getting crushed under an oncoming train at a station in Thane district in Maharashtra.<\/p>\n
In a 29-second video of the incident shared by the Central Railways’ Mumbai division, a 30-year-old woman, who is blind, is seen walking with her six-year-old son on the platform when he accidentally slips and falls onto the railway tracks.<\/p>\n
The pointsman, Mayur Shelke, is seen rushing towards the child and pushing him back onto the platform just in time before the express train enters the platform at Vangani Railway Station.<\/p>\n
‘I saw the Udyan Express heading towards him.<\/p>\n
A thought just hit me that I have to save his life and I started running towards him. Within seconds I got scared and thought of backing out. I even slowed down and tried to get away from tracks. But I could not see him die and started running again,’ Shelke, 30, told The Indian Express.<\/p>\n
Shelke stays in Neral with his parents and wife and a 10-day-old boy. When asked how his family reacted to his heroics, Shelke said, ‘I did not inform them for two days. But today the video went viral and they called me up. At first my mother scolded me but later she said she is proud of what I did. My wife too got scared and was very angry with me. She said I should have thought of them first. But she is happy now.’<\/p>\n
Shelke also earned praise from Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.<\/p>\n
‘Very proud of Mayur Shelke, Railwayman from the Vangani Railway Station in Mumbai who has done an exceptionally courageous act, risked his own life & saved a child’s life,’ Goyal tweeted.<\/p>\n
The Central Railway’s also announced an award for his bravery.<\/p>\n
