Chennai court sentenced 6 months jail to ex MP Jaya Prada

Chennai 11 Aug : Veteran actress and former MP Jaya Prada was sentenced to six months in jail by the Egmore court in Chennai on Thursday for not paying the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) share collected from the workers of the ‘Jayaprada Theater Complex’.

Three others have also been sentenced along with her and the court imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on them.Jayaprada used to run a movie theater in Rayapeta, Chennai in collaboration with Ram Kumar and Raja Babu from Chennai. The theatre had to be eventually closed down because of lack of revenue.At that time, some money was collected from the theatre workers in the form of Employees State Insurance (ESI). Due to the closure of the theatre, the refunds were not handed over to the workers and the workers approached the insurance corporation. The insurance company approached the Chennai Egmore court and filed a petition against the theater management.
