An earthquake of magnitude 7 strikes Morocco results in at least 296 fatalities.

Morocco 9 Sep : Morocco’s interior ministry reports that at least 296 people have perished after a strong earthquake struck late Friday night in Marrakech.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake’s initial magnitude was 6.8 when it struck at 11:11 p.m. local time, and an aftershock that occurred about 20 minutes later had a Richter scale reading of 4.9.The jolts which were recorded by Morocco’s National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network as being 7.2 in magnitude, caused several structures to collapse around the country’s cities and forced residents to flee their homes in the middle of the night.According to Reuters, most fatalities were reported from Morocco’s remote mountainous regions.Locals posted videos of demolished structures on social media, including the well-known red walls enclosing Marrakech’s ancient city and the Unesco World Heritage Site.

So far 296 people confirmed to have died with over 150 injured as the toll is expected to rise further, according to the interior ministry.The tremors were felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria, Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere and Algeria’s Civil Defense agency said.
